Hesed – 2 Samuel 9:1-13
2 Samuel 9:1-13 tells the story of Mephibosheth and David, and how the latter works out the covenant promise he made with Mephibosheth’s father, Jonathan, son of Saul, Israel’s first king. David showed Mephibosheth the same “hesed” (kindness) that God had shown him. In the account we are encouraged to see our selves in Mephibosheth, and the Father’s hesed (kindness) toward us according to what He and Jesus had in mind before the foundation of the earth. We are also encouraged to treat others with the same “hesed” (kindness) as God has shown us. Finally, despite our sinfulness and rebellious hearts toward God, our name is safe in God’s mouth just as Mephibosheth’s name was safe in the mouth of David.
