There is a need for the Holy Spirit in coming to grips with the relationships that Paul talks about in Ephesians 5:22-6:9. Verse 21 sets the scene: “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” While this message only speaks into one of them, husbands and wives, the need for the filling of the Holy Spirit for both our understanding of the relationship and in the practise of mutual submission within it cannot be denied. Without the Holy Spirit, trying to do what this passage tells us with respect to wives submiting to their husbands as the Church submits itself to Christ, and husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the Church, is impossible and unwise. But for a marriage to be that picture of the relationship between the Church and Christ Jesus, husband’s and wive’s need to grapple with this passage and allow the Holy Spirit into their relationship.
